Enchanting Antique Pocket Watch
Enchanting Antique Pocket Watch
DuAn enchanting 18k gold antique pocket watch by renowned Swiss watchmaker, Henry Capt. Rich in symbolism, the front features lovely Limoges-style enamel work with a royal blue background showing a crown above two lighter blue ovals. The left oval has a fleur-de-lis and the right oval has a lion rampant holding a sword. There is beautiful hand-chased detailing around the perimeter of the watch and on the bail.
While we can only speculate as to the meaning to the original wearer, it is interesting to note that the three symbols represented are often associated with royalty and strength, as are the colors used. Lions often symbolize strength, courage, nobility, royalty, power, and valor. A standing lion in this position is known as a lion rampant. This one is facing forward, prepared and vigilant, and the sword reinforces his strength. The fleur-de-lis is commonly associated with France and has been a symbol of French royalty and nobility since the Middle Ages. In Catholicism, the three petals represent the holy trinity and also the three popular Victorian era virtues of hope, faith, and charity. A fleur-de-lis can also symbolize strength. And a white lily can be a symbol of purity.
Henry-Daniel Capt (1773 – 1840) was a renowned Swiss watch maker, especially known for his automaton and musical watches. The business was continued by his son, Henry Jr., and later purchased by Gallopin in 1880. Some of Capt's more intricate and complicated watches have sold for high prices at auction. There are also some fine examples of his work in the Swiss National Museum in Geneva.
This pocket watch comes with two watch keys. One that is likely original and is 12k gold at the top and iron on the end. It comes on a 9k gold chain. The other is a replacement and is base metal.
SIZE / MEASUREMENTS:
18k gold
11 grams
7/8" wide by 1-1/4" tall (including bail)
CONDITION:
The watch is not currently functional. It seems like it wants to start, but would need to be reviewed and repaired by someone with experience in antique pocket watches. There is some enamel loss to the outer edges on the front, but it does not detract from the design. The hinge at the bottom has turned slightly and is out on one side more than the other. It doesn't seem at risk of falling out.
MARKINGS:
The inside is engraved "Henry Capt GENEVE"
below that is a serial number that looks to me to be 14106 then the word "Aiguilles" (which means "hands" in pocket watch lingo) "ECHAPPEMENT A CYLINDRE HUIT TROUS EN RUBIS" (translates to "cylinder escapement with eight holes in rubies (jewels)"). Beneath that it is engraved "Refinished by J. Pitts, Athens"
Antique and vintage items are pre-worn and pre-loved, so some wear is to be expected. I will be sure to mention any wear or damage that stands out to me above what I consider to be normal wear for something of that age. Please ask any questions you may have and request additional photos prior to purchasing.
This listing is for the pocket watch and two watch keys only. Any boxes or other items shown in photos are for display purposes and are not included in the sale.
