Vintage Gold Buckle Ring
Vintage Gold Buckle Ring
A lovely smooth vintage English buckle ring in a buttery 18k yellow gold. The buckle has been a symbol of eternal love, with a sentiment that the giver and receiver go together like a belt and its buckle. This band looks great on its own and would also be a good stacker! The date stamp on the hallmark is hard for me to discern the year - it's a "v" and based on the style of the font it could be from the 1880s, 1920, or 1940s. I'm going to go with the 1940s and call this a Victorian/Edwardian revival style. I would much rather sell something as newer and have it turn out to be older than vice versa.
Buckle rings (or garter rings as they are also called) came into fashion in the Victorian era. Queen Victoria was a member of the Royal Order of the Garter. The members wear a blue garter buckled on their knee, but Queen Victoria chose to wear hers on her arm instead, launching a garter jewelry fashion trend.
SIZE / MEASUREMENTS:
The ring is size 7.
The band is about 4mm wide at the top and 2mm wide at the back of the shank.
2.07 grams
CONDITION:
Please note that while it is hallmarked for 18k gold, it acid tested slightly lower (but above 14k). The buckle decorations on the band are a bit worn, which gives it a nice vintage character. The shape of the shank is more oblong than round, which leads me to believe it has been resized at some point.
MARKINGS:
Full hallmarks for 18k gold, Birmingham 1945 (?) The date stamp is the letter "v" which is hard to discern between a few of the options. I'm going to go with 1945, however it may be older.
Antique and vintage items are pre-worn and pre-loved, so some wear is to be expected. I will be sure to mention any wear or damage that stands out to me above what I consider to be normal wear for something of that age. Please ask any questions you may have and request additional photos prior to purchasing.
